Weekend a' Cometh
I forgot to mention in the last post, Jake and I saw the nnew Star Wars flick and The Dark Knight. I suppose I should give you a heads-up on both flicks.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars
First off, this movie fits well as the Pilot Episode for a TV series. I don't know that it really has any place in the theatre as the entire movie has the "TV show" feel to it. It was entertaining, but not Movie theatre grade entertainment.
The ending of the movie left everything open for the series to finish out. I really hope they are able to get some good writers, because I seriously want to see the series do well. There really isn't any decent Sci Fi on TV right now as most shows are being replaced with Reality TV or the mundane "Monster Qwest" type shows where they don't prove or disprove anything, but seem to make creepy things happen.
The rest of SciFi seems to be left overs from the Star Gate Franchise and sprinkling of shows that may make it if they were interesting enough. So far, the only thing Sci Fi I regularly watch are the few scattered Star trek episodes from Enterprise and The Next Generation. DS9, I am slowly acquiring from Collumbia House DVD Club and I plan to do the same with Voyager.
Back to Star Wars - the movie hints about some of the things Anakin did in Attack of the Clones, but you'll find many characters simply aren't in this movie or are only given breif cameos. That may be great if this truly is a pilot episode, but as a movie, it would have been nice to at least see General Greivous in action.
Honestly, I was disappointed with the movie as it plays heavily on the "hey, its star wars" mentality. Seem like it was only rushed into theatres to make money on another summer of blockbusters.
Batman: The Dark Knight
Ok, lets push aside all thoughts about the tragedy the were a prelude to this movie, the Oscar buzz, and the fact that it is steadily creeping towards beating Titanic out for Box office Draw.
Now that all of that dribble is out of the way, lets look at this movie. The Dark Knight was a very good movie, in my eyes. It was very much the crime drama, with Batman involved.
To be perfectly honest, Heath ledger's performance as The Joker was brilliant in how truly creepy he is. I enjoyed the movie, but I'm not sure I could sit through it again. The movie was about 2 and a half hours long. While the loose ends do get tied up, it is unfortunate that the producers would have to make one hell of a movie to beat this one out.
I don't want to give too much of the movie away, but it is easily the best flick in theatres and I am happy to see it beating out the loathesome Titanic. The fact that movie ever made it that far is just disgusting.
Now, lets consider the Buzz around the movie. Heath ledger's performance is truly creepy. I can easily see the reason for the Oscar Buzz and it would be a fitting tribute to the poor man.
Some annoyances about this film was the "Batman voice." It seemed really lame. ITs one thing if he growled, but the raspy voice was just bad. The rest of the film was actually very busy. I'd recommend seeing this film in a good theatre with plenty of beverage and snacks - maybe nachos and a pepsi.
